Is Starting Your Own Business a Good Idea in This Economy?

People often come to me with this question – I have a career right now, I’ve always dreamed about starting my own business, but I’m just terrified of quitting my job and losing my regular income during this economy…
You may be surprised by my answer, but I really don’t ever recommend anyone to just quit your job to start your business.
The truth is, I did it that way myself, but I only recommend people doing that when they cannot be convinced of anything else – when they are standing at such a strong place of belief that they just absolutely know it’s going to work.
If you are not standing in that absolute place of knowing about starting your own business, don’t quit your day job – because you’ll put too much pressure on you energetically.
What really can be valuable and useful is to start out in such a way where you can begin to create some revenue from your dream business on top of what you are already doing in your career. Then, once it begins to start on the way to replacing that income, you can start activating more of the belief of, “Yeah, if I could just put some more time into this, this could really take off!”
I’ve seen a lot of people quit their job because they’ve got a dream for a business and a passion to be their own boss – but they minute they quit, they’ve activated the lack mentality of not having a regular income right away.
They’re putting out these rockets of desire, but they’re cancelling them out because of their fear and worry – it’s like putting your foot on the gas and the brake on the same time. When you do that, nothing happens!
Don’t be afraid to start more slowly…
- Put some feelers out
- Start talking to people
- Put in a couple weekend or evening hours
- Don’t invest a lot of money right away
You’ll find that you’ll be building up positive evidence through this process that is going to put you in a place of power in starting your own business that you may not have had access to before!
One client that I coached really wanted to start an organizing business. She had a passion for it and knew it could be successful…but my strong advice to her was not to quit her day job right away.
I coached her to start doing some of it on the weekends – start getting some clients and building up positive evidences before quitting her day job.
So she did do that, and she just started talking to people about what she wanted to do. In the meantime, I was working with her on how to get clear on her ideal clients, what their problems and issues are, how to get inside their heads and hearts to make a telepathic connection with them and really how to have those conversations.
What happened through all of this was that she started naturally leveraging those situations – at the softball games with other moms, in the PTA meetings, at church – she just started having these natural conversations that didn’t require any additional time or investment from her, and people started getting interested!
They felt her passion, she started to get work, and before you knew it, she was at the point of saying, “Hey, this could work!”
All of this began to happen for her in an easy and flowing way, and it became a natural transition to move out of the one career and into the other – and she was running her business successfully.
I do recommend to most people that want to enter into the entrepreneurial world that they do it this way.
The only exception is if you have a burning, passionate desire and nothing I say or anyone else says is going to convince you otherwise! You are burning all bridges, it’s full steam ahead, and there’s no way you could possibly fail because failure is not an option.
I know that this can happen because it’s how I felt myself when I started my own business, and anyone that I’ve ever coached that has done that has felt the same way – they had to in order to be in energetic alignment with allowing that to be a match to them!
Otherwise, don’t give up your day job until you begin to start seeing these positive evidences that what you want to do really will work for you. You’re putting yourself under way too much pressure, and it’s not even really the most responsible thing to do if you have obligations and responsibilities…
UNLESS, even as you’re reading this post it’s not changing your mind.
If you’re saying, “Sharon, I don’t care what you say, I’m going to do it anyway and wild horses couldn’t keep me from it!”
Well then my answer to that is, “I’m with you.”
It all comes down to this – putting yourself under the kind of pressure that says, “I HAVE to make money right now” – it’s really pushing the energetic envelope. It’s like trying to stand up in a tidal wave and thinking you won’t get pushed over – you’d better have something to hold onto!
People around you are going to contribute to that – you’ll hear things like, “What are you going to do? How are you going to make any money? What are you kidding me? You quit your job?”
It’s tidal wave energy.
If you’re someone that says, “It’s all right, I’ve got my surfboard, I’m gonna ride the wave”, great! You’ll know you’re that person if I couldn’t even convince you in this post not to do it that way!
Otherwise, I really want to encourage you as your coach that it is possible to have a job, to be putting out your energetic feelers in the world for the business you want, and still have balance. I have coached many people to do it this way, and I encourage you to do the same.

Although starting a new business doesn’t need any specific time but I’ll prefer to build own business first without quitting job. I had no choices when I started my own internet business but fortunately I am lucky enough to earn and learn but not all the world is lucky.
This world wouldn’t stop due to bad economies. Even there are some people who are in benefit due to the same(I am talking about giants in Stock markets) conditions. I don’t mind starting new businesses if I would have moeny and resources in my hands.
You made some good points there. I found most people will agree with your blog.
Taking that plunge can be really scary. But there ARE success stories out there.
We have a bunch on our site but I think my favorite is Lisa’s. She had a Fortune 500 job but was miserable. Her husband gave her a gentle nudge and she discovered a whole new path and couldn’t be happier running her own biz.

I don’t think so. Although, the recession has started to end, but, still it is risky to start any new business. I prefer to work as a freelancer in this economic crisis.
Great tips!!!
your blog came to my attention by word-of-mouth, and I was skeptical at first. So I visit your blog… And i think that this is really a nice blog!
I really liked your blog!
Creating your own business is exciting, liberating, and best of all you are your own boss. No more following orders. It’s definitely something worth doing.
Top post. I look forward to reading more. Cheers
Great article. honestly I too think starting your own business is the way to go. Nothing big to start off with. Start it and then may be expand depending on how things are going. The best thing to do in my opinion.
I think now would be a good time start something. The economy has just revived and its up and running..Surely if you manage your business correctly, it would as go in flow with the economy. So yes I do think its the best time to start a business!
You wouldn’t believe how long ive been looking for something like this. Scrolled through 9 pages of Google results couldn’t find diddly squat. First page of Bing. There you are!… Really gotta start using that more often
starting a new business is real excitement and trill to me. Getting its mission is really challenging…
anyway, starting a new business is not easy I must admit.
thank you very much for sharing.
That really depends on what business you are going to start. If you think about strategy, many business until now are stronger much better with or without the drop on economy. So if you’re trying to open a new business, you should think wisely.
I have just started my new website. I want to make it as a business for me. I was looking for any good article in this regard. I just found it. Many thanx!

I think starting a business is always a good idea regardless of the current economic situation. As long as what your developing is a solution to what people really need and your passionate about the business idea then you’ll probably stand a good chance of success…obviously the better the economy the better your chances.
good one i like this one.
My partner has been wanting to start his own business for quite a while, and although I am surprised about the advice you give, I really appreciate your honesty. I will show him your site later, thanks.

I think it really depends on the industry you are planning on entering and also your business plan. If you intend to invest a lot of capital and re-mortgage the home, then it might not be the best idea. If on the other hand you are just looking start selling online as an affiliate – then I think its great, you have nothing to lose.

I think that starting a business is a great idea if one has weighed the pros and cons and the pros side win hands down. However, it is always good to have a fallback … or, in other words, to play safe, at least at the start. Maybe quitting your job so you could start your business is too risky. Find ways to invest time for both occupations (your current job and starting your own business) without significantly compromising either. And then, when you are assured that your business is flourishing (and will continue to do so), that’s the time when you deliberate on quitting your job. After all, losing that precious, dependable monthly income could deal a hard blow on your finances. So be very careful in making decisions.
I think it can be a great idea if you have a solid business plan and obviously if you have the money. I personally wouldn’t want to take the risk of starting my own business if it meant my house was going to be on the line as security for a loan but if the business had little start-up costs and looked very promising then it could be a great way forward.

This is really helpful. Setting goals is something which I often struggle with, as I tend to make them either unachievable or I don’t make any at all. It’s easy to think about what you want to achieve, but unless you write it down and make some solid goals with time periods, it is unlikely that they will ever be achieved. Thanks a lot.
