What Can an Entrepreneur Learn From Reality TV?

Did you see the latest episode of the Biggest Loser?
I’ve watched several seasons of the show, and something really struck me as I was watching the latest episode last night.
I’ve always noticed that most of the contestants on this show seem to be pretty nice people.
There’s not a whole lot of “game-playing” that goes on in the show, which has often stood out to me as a marked difference from what you might see on a lot of programming out there.
A noted exception was last season’s contestant, Vicki, who made no bones about being there with the sole reason of playing the game and doing whatever it took to win no matter what.
The interesting thing is though, Vicki really was an exception on this show.
I have rarely seen more positive TV then in watching what these people are striving to do, and their ratings just keep getting higher every season!
The thing that impressed me on last night’s episode was one of the contestants, Tara. She happened to win a “challenge” among the contestants, and one of the rewards that she won was the ability to call home to her family.
(If you don’t want to show, the contestants are sequestered on a ranch with no contact with home for several months while they participate in the show).
So Tara won this great prize, and then she happily turned around and gave it away to a fellow contestant – someone she knew had a wife at home that he was missing a lot. And she didn’t do it for any motivation beyond wanting to serve this other person.
Then she turned around and helped another contestant complete the rest of the challenge (climbing up a mountain!) when he was lagging behind, inspiring several of the others to go and help as well.
Throughout the first few episodes, this girl’s personality has shone like a bright light among all of the contestants.
But there is a prevailing attitude among everyone on the show to really keep things positive and to be there as a support for each other – rather than try to step on everyone else just to win the prize at the end.
People are beginning to recognize that coming from a place of serving and kindness is actually growing more fashionable.
For instance, on one of the most recent episodes of the Reality TV show, Survivor, it was the nicest person that actually won the competition – the one person that didn’t play the game at a cutthroat level (which is quite a change from the usual trend!)
There is another reality TV show coming out in the fall that is about the beauty within – the contestants believe that they are being judged on their outer beauty, but what it will really come down to is how beautiful they are on the inside.
What a shift in reality programming from what we have seen before!
Little by little, you can begin to sense a change…
It is happening everywhere. There is spiritual awakening going on.
Spirituality is no longer something simply reserved for Sundays, or the claims of one particular religion or influence.
You will begin to see more and more Spiritualpreneurs living a value based and purpose driven life that impacts every aspect of their business.
This is what your clients are calling out for!
- People want to have experiences of integrity.
- They want to be dealt with at an honest, true level.
- They want an entrepreneur that is going to serve to them, instead of sell to them.
When you see something like this that is even impacting the media, you know you need to take it seriously!
There are glimmers of this hope even in Reality TV programming. People are getting tired of the sensationalism and the dog-eat-dog world that has previously been portrayed.
It has even been impacting advertising revenues!
There is an awakening going on right now that shows how much people are aligned with these principles.
In the past, being an entrepreneur has always been about survival of the fittest.
It is changing now because of the pioneers – the people within the smaller businesses that are the leading edge entrepreneurs that don’t want to be like the status quo any longer.
If you are a Spiritualpreneur, you have a visionary based mentality.
You want to create things in ways that don’t have to look like they did in the past. It’s no longer only about crushing your competition and everything being outer based alone.

I’ve just found your excellent blog. You have some really useful articles in here – so I shall be back for another read when I get back from work. Keep it coming…
Similar story happen at the first season of “The Contender” where this guy named Joey Gilbert who supposed to be win an individual challenge and the prize is a $40,000 car. The surprising thing about this is he intentionally stopped before the finish line (the line is 3 inches in front of him)to let sergio finish the race and win the car. This creates a buzz online.
