Why is it Important for an Entrepreneur to be Healthy in Body & Spirit?

Yesterday I mentioned how even as a busy entrepreneur, it IS possible to find the time to manage your energy throughout your day. The key is all about not making a big production out of it!

I understand that entire mental state, because I used to MAKE time in my day to do all of these things – meditation, affirmations, yoga, spiritual energy management, etc., etc.

I had a special room set up in my house with all sorts of temple stuff for meditation, and special equipment in my office for my exercises, and special clothes to wear…and while it made it all kind of exciting at first, it got to the point where it just felt like, “I don’t have the time to do all this stuff!”

But at the same time, I really believe that it is important to do all of these things on a daily basis, which is why I began to shift my perception around the whole idea of adding to my TO DO list vs. just finding spaces in the day to leverage my time and energies.

I shared yesterday on getting your energy management steps done before you even leave your bedroom in the morning (can you imagine what a great opening that is to your day?).

Here are a couple of other steps I like to take to make sure I fit the soul care in with my daily, necessary outer actions:

When I have to drive anywhere,  I don’t ever listen to the radio anymore.

I now use that time to:

  • Do affirmations
  • Put in a meditation CD as a passive kind of experience (something you just need to listen to)
  • Just be in appreciation – as I’m driving, I appreciate the road and the people around me and the beautiful environment that I live in

I don’t necessarily use that time for learning, because again, it feels like another thing I Have To Do – like, “I’m gonna learn French while I’m driving…ugh!”

Just do something that feels really easy – and look for those types of opportunities in your day.

Eating is another one.
Right before I eat, I use it as an anchor time to review what’s happened since the last time I ate.

It takes maybe a minute to sit there before I eat and reflect on what’s gone well since the last time I ate – “Wow, what’s happened since breakfast?  Well, I had these great meetings and these great coaching sessions – I’m really grateful for those…”

And as I appreciate that, I also take a moment before I eat to appreciate the food. Then I bless the food – I just say, “I’m asking for this food to really assimilate in my body in a way that serves my body to perfect health in all ways.

And I’m asking for my body to have the highest health and the highest energy from the food I’m about to eat.”

In my opinion, that’s really what praying before our food is all about.  It’s about blessing the food so that it assimilates well into your body, so that you can be grateful for your experience in being alive, and being able to taste and savor good things like this.

You know, I used to rush through meals and cram everything down in about 5 minutes – that was my Type A personality from corporate America that made it into some sort of competition to see how quickly you could bolt everything down.

I mean, it was like bragging rights to say something like, “It only took me 15 minutes to eat lunch today!”

I have learned that there is value in taking the time to chew each bite 20 times.  I know this sounds really basic, but you will be surprised at how much you can get out of something like this!

By chewing each bite of your food 20 times, you’re going to eat less, you’re going to masticate your food so that it’s digested better, you’re going to feel fuller, and you’re going to be more in appreciation and your body is going to eat less food.

Another thing I do is I always drink a glass of water before I eat.  In part because it’s really hard for me to get in 8-10 glasses of water a day – I’m talking a lot, so I can’t just be constantly drinking water.

So I figure, if I have a glass of water at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and 2 snacks, that’s 5 times a day that I have an opportunity for water.

It’s all about incorporating it all as an anchor point for yourself:

  • Here I am going to eat
  • Take a moment to reflect on what’s happened
  • Put positive energy on the food
  • Drink a glass of water
  • Chew slowly
  • And I’m full

Finding this type of balance in your life doesn’t have to be this big complicated thing.  It can be very simple.

And when you are at this point of taking these steps and feeling more calm and more healthy – when your body is full and energetic and hydrated appropriately – you truly function at a very different level as an entrepreneur!

Begin to leverage your time to be healthier in both body and spirit, and you will see the results!

Yeah, I totally agree. Eating healthy food doesn’t necessary means you have a healthy living. One of problems of today’s lifestyle is that many of us we rush to almost anything. We don’t seem to have any time for the little things that matters the most, especially during the lunch or dinner time when we end-up gobbling just like monkeys.
